Last year I did a one month IBM Corporate Service Corps assignment in Manila, Philippines where I helped people how to create interactive flood maps of Metro Manila.

Yesterday, a friend and co-worker sent me the following message:

Here in PH, it has been raining for days due to a typhoon. Marikina is on standby for with rubber boats. Evacuation in some ares in Metro Manila have been done already. Classes and work in the government are suspended today. Still lots of flooded areas and heavy traffic. A dam in Bulacan has released some water and another dam is nearing its its limit.

Let’s hope that everybody will be alright after the storm is over. Finger-crossing!

Rizal once had a run-in with a Chinese merchant and vowed never to buy anything from the Chinese again.

According to Ocampo, Rizal was once involved in a lawsuit with a Chinese sari-sari store owner in 1895. It aggravated him so much that he told his mother he would never buy anything from the Chinese again. Interestingly enough, Rizal was also part Chinese.

Rizal had another unfortunate run-in with the sari-sari store owner at the Dapitan Stocking Market of 1896. When a priest decreed that women should attend mass in shoes and stockings, women came in men’s socks instead—bought for three reales a pair, presumably from the Chinese merchant. Rizal also wanted to cash in on the demand, and once he had his own stocks to sell (two dozens sent by his sister), the trend ended. The merchant had sold most of his while Rizal had, as Ocampo put it, nearly 10 years worth left.
